Long days, short shots, the usual. The hyena came in at last light on the third night of sitting the bait. He was the older of two we'd seen on camera, the one with the paler shoulders. I'd been told you only get one chance with a spotted on a bait — they spook off the sound of a safety thumb, never mind a shot — and that turned out to be exactly right.

Different country, different rules. Brown hyena is a different animal in every respect from spotted — smaller, shyer, almost never seen during daylight outside the Skeleton Coast where they scavenge seal pups in broad sun. Permits took longer than the hunt itself.
